JIS G 3561 & Spring Wire Standards: ASTM/JIS/EN Cross-Reference
Global sourcing means drawings arrive in three standard systems. The families below often serve similar applications, but the specifications are not automatically identical. Treat this as a preliminary cross-reference and verify the current standard, diameter-specific strength, chemistry, and certificate before approving a substitution.
The main equivalence table
| Material family | ASTM (US) | JIS (Japan) | EN (Europe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Music wire | A228 | G 3522 SWP-A/B | 10270-1 SH/DH |
| Hard-drawn carbon | A227 | G 3521 SW-B/C | 10270-1 SL/SM |
| Oil-tempered carbon | A229 | G 3560 SWO-A/B | 10270-2 FDC/TDC |
| Chrome silicon | A401 | G 3561 SWOSC-V | 10270-2 VDSiCr |
| Chrome vanadium | A231/A232 | SWOCV-V | 10270-2 VDCrV |
| Stainless 302/304 | A313 T302 | G 4314 SUS304-WPB | 10270-3 1.4310 |
| Stainless 316 | A313 T316 | SUS316-WPA | 10270-3 1.4401 |
| 17-7PH | A313 T631 | SUS631-WPC | 1.4568 |
What actually differs between systems
- Strength tables: each standard tabulates tensile strength by diameter slightly differently; class letters (SWP-A vs B; SL/SM/SH) select strength levels
- Testing and certification formats: JIS mills document differently than EN mills; if your auditor expects EN 10204 3.1 certificates, say so up front
- Preferred diameters: metric vs inch stock ranges differ; a 0.9 mm JIS drawing quoted in the US may become 0.035" — verify the conversion tolerance
Practical rules for buyers
- Put one standard on the drawing and add "or equivalent" unless regulation forbids substitution.
- If dual-sourcing across regions, list both designations explicitly.
- Never mix a JIS strength class with an ASTM name ("A228 class B" does not exist).
Availability varies by diameter, strength class, and required certificate. Send the drawing and required standard with your RFQ; we will confirm the actual material designation and certificate before quoting a substitution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is JIS SWP-B really the same steel as ASTM A228?
They are often compared for preliminary sourcing, but they are separate specifications and should not be declared identical without checking the current editions, wire diameter, strength class, chemistry, and certificate.
My European drawing says "1.4310". What is that?
The EN numeric name for 18/8 chromium-nickel spring stainless — equivalent to ASTM 302/JIS SUS302-WPB territory. See our stainless article for grade behavior.
Which standard should a new drawing use?
The one your quality system and audience know best. For Asia-served supply chains, JIS designations get the fastest, cheapest sourcing; adding "or equivalent" keeps global options open.
