Chrome Vanadium vs Chrome Silicon Wire for Custom Springs

Formosa Spring ·

Quick answer: Chrome vanadium or chrome silicon wire for your custom spring? Cr-Si handles more heat and fatigue cycles; Cr-V trades a little of that for toughness under shock loading. Here's how to choose between them.

When music wire runs out of fatigue life, temperature, or size range, the alloyed carbon steels — chrome silicon and chrome vanadium — are the next rung on the ladder.

Chrome silicon (Cr-Si)

Oil-tempered chromium-silicon wire (JIS SWOSC-V, ASTM A401) is today's workhorse for demanding springs:

  • Fatigue: valve-spring pedigree; with certified cleanliness grades, the best cyclic performance of any carbon steel
  • Temperature: stable to roughly 245°C — double music wire's comfort zone
  • Set resistance: high yield point holds free length under sustained stress
  • Sizes: strong availability in 1–10 mm, exactly where heavy-duty springs live

Typical homes: engine and transmission springs, die springs, high-cycle industrial automation, suspensions.

Chrome vanadium (Cr-V)

The older alloy (ASTM A231, SWOCV-V) gives up a little fatigue strength versus Cr-Si but offers excellent toughness — resistance to shock and impact loading:

  • Impact tools: jackhammers, tampers, recoil systems
  • Agricultural implements hitting stones and stumps
  • Service to ~220°C

Choosing between them

Cyclic, predictable loading → chrome silicon. Impact, abuse, shock → chrome vanadium. Both need stress relieving after coiling and reward shot peening in fatigue service. Neither resists corrosion — plan phosphate + oil, plating, or paint.

Taiwan's spring cluster runs both alloys daily, with mill-certified SWOSC-V stocked locally. Put your duty cycle and temperature on the RFQ and we will confirm the grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chrome silicon worth the premium over music wire?

When cycles exceed ~10⁵ at meaningful stress, temperature passes 120°C, or wire diameter exceeds music wire's practical range — yes, decisively. Below that, music wire remains the value answer.

What is "valve spring quality" (VSQ) wire?

Cr-Si wire produced with certified limits on inclusions and surface defects, plus eddy-current inspection. Specify it when a broken spring means a broken machine.

Can these alloys be used unplated?

Only in oiled or dry-protected service. Their corrosion behavior is like any carbon steel; humidity will rust them, and rust destroys their fatigue advantage.

What is SWOSC-V material?

SWOSC-V is the JIS designation for oil-tempered chrome-silicon spring wire — the alloy described above, equivalent to ASTM A401. It's the standard call-out for this grade on Asia-sourced drawings.
